  1.          THE SLIT-LAMP BIOMICROSCOPE

  4. This instrument is composed of two main 
  5. components.  The slit-lamp which is the light 
  6. source and the controls to modify the size, 
  7. shape, direction, color and intensity of the light.
  8.  
  9. The second main component is the biomicroscope
  10. -the microscope used to view the eye.  The 
  11. magnification can be varied.  
  12.  
  13. The slit-lamp and biomicroscope can be moved in 
  14. relation to the patient using the joy stick for 
  15. focusing and bringing structures into view.  The 
  16. remaining portions of the instrument are the 
  17. headrest to hold the patient still and the 
  18. adjustable table or stand instrument for holding the 
  19. slit-lamp biomicroscope to position it before the patient.

  21. The accurate term for the instrument is the slit-lamp biomicroscope, however, by convention each individual term is used to refer to the whole instrument.
